Muzeu i Maskave Veneciane

About

Muzeu i Maskave Veneciane in Shkodër is one of the city’s most surprising cultural stops—a vivid, theatrical space dedicated to the artistry of Venetian mask‑making. Founded by a family of artisans with roots in Venice, the museum showcases handcrafted masks created using traditional techniques, offering a bridge between Shkodër’s long ties to the Adriatic world and the timeless elegance of Venetian carnival culture. Inside, the first thing that catches your eye is the explosion of colour and texture. You’ll see classic Carnevale masks such as the Bauta, Colombina, and Medico della Peste, each decorated with gold leaf, feathers, lace, or hand‑painted motifs. Many masks are unique pieces designed specifically for the museum, blending Venetian tradition with Albanian symbols—an intriguing cultural fusion. A particularly interesting fact is that the artisans here still use centuries‑old methods: papier‑mâché moulds, natural pigments, and fine brushes for detailing. Visitors can observe the mask‑making process in dedicated workshop areas, where unfinished pieces reveal how layers of material gradually become ornate works of art.
