The Englishman's clock tower

The Englishman’s Clock Tower is one of Shkodër’s most unusual landmarks, a small but charming structure with a story that blends local history and foreign influence. Built in the late 19th century, it owes its name to an English engineer who lived in Shkodër and helped design or repair the mechanism—an uncommon collaboration at a time when the city was shaped mainly by Ottoman and Balkan craftsmen. Its presence reflects Shkodër’s openness to outside ideas, especially during periods of trade and cultural exchange. The tower itself is modest, with clean lines and a square base that once made it easy to spot from surrounding neighbourhoods. Inside, the most interesting feature is the clock mechanism, originally operated by weights and gears that required regular manual winding. Though parts of the original system have been replaced or restored over time, the structure still conveys the precision and craftsmanship of 19th‑century horology. Visitors can also observe the upper chamber where the bell once marked the hours for nearby residents. The tower’s interior is simple, but its historical layers make it compelling: it served not only as a timekeeper but also as a symbol of modernity during a period when Shkodër was rapidly transforming.
