Nativity of Christ Orthodox Cathedral is one of Shkodër’s most serene landmarks, a modern yet deeply symbolic church that reflects the revival of Orthodox life after decades of religious suppression. Completed in the early 2000s, it stands out for its bright façade, elegant arches, and a dome that fills the interior with soft, diffused light. Inside, the cathedral’s most striking feature is its iconostasis, a richly carved wooden screen separating the nave from the sanctuary. Its icons—painted in the traditional Byzantine style—depict Christ, the Virgin Mary, and key saints of the Orthodox tradition. The colours are vivid, the gold leaf luminous, creating a sense of sacred presence. Another highlight is the central dome, decorated with religious imagery that draws the eye upward, symbolising the connection between earth and heaven. The cathedral also houses smaller chapels and devotional corners where visitors can see Orthodox liturgical objects such as censers, Gospel books, and embroidered vestments.
