Lead Mosque

About

Lead Mosque is one of Shkodër’s most distinctive historic monuments, a quiet architectural treasure standing on the banks of the Buna River. Built in 1773 by Mehmet Pasha Bushati, it earned its name from the thin sheets of lead that once covered its dome and roof—an unusual and costly choice that made the mosque famous throughout northern Albania. Although much of the lead was removed over time, the structure still preserves its elegant Ottoman proportions. Inside, the prayer hall is simple and atmospheric. You can see the original stone mihrab with its delicate carvings, and the tall minbar used for Friday sermons. The interior once featured painted floral motifs typical of 18th‑century Ottoman art; traces of these decorations remain visible on the walls and arches. The mosque’s acoustics are remarkable—its dome was engineered to carry the imam’s voice clearly without amplification. One of the most interesting facts is that the Lead Mosque was part of a larger complex including a madrasa, library, and guesthouse, making it a centre of learning and hospitality. Although these buildings no longer survive, the mosque’s courtyard still hints at the scale of the original ensemble.

Lead Mosque
Location

You will find it at Rruga e Tabakëve 1, Shkodër. The name comes from its domes that were originally covered in lead. It was built back in 1773 and today it stands in a field near the water, which makes it look very photogenic and calm compared to the city mosques. Because of its location, the biggest attraction nearby is Rozafa Castle. It is just up the hill from the mosque, and from there you get an amazing view over Lake Shkodër, the Buna and Drin rivers, and the whole city. Most people visit both places together. Not far away you also have the city center itself, with Rruga Kole Idromeno, the main pedestrian street full of cafes and old colorful buildings. There you can stop at the Marubi National Museum of Photography, the Shkodër Historical Museum, and the Site of Witness and Memory. The Ebu Bekr Mosque and the Orthodox Cathedral of the Nativity are also close if you want to keep exploring the religious side of the city.
