Just 15 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam, Muiderslot Castle is one of the Netherlands’ oldest and best-preserved medieval fortresses. Built around 1285 by Count Floris V to control trade along the River Vecht, the castle has witnessed centuries of intrigue, rebellion, and cultural flourishing. After Floris’s dramatic assassination within its walls, the castle fell into ruin before being rebuilt in the 14th century. In the 17th century, it became the residence of poet and historian Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, who hosted a vibrant circle of artists and intellectuals known as the Muiderkring. Today, Muiderslot is a national museum offering immersive experiences through its restored knight’s hall, dungeons, and period rooms. Visitors can explore the castle’s towers, stroll through its plum orchard and herb gardens, and enjoy seasonal events like open-air theater and yoga on the grounds. Muiderslot Castle, also known as Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot, is a well-preserved medieval fortress located in Muiden, a picturesque town about 15 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam. Built around 1285 by Count Floris V, the castle was strategically positioned near the mouth of the Vecht River to control important waterway trade routes and enforce tolls. The castle features characteristic round corner towers, a defensive moat, and thick brick walls, reflecting its medieval military architecture. Today, Muiderslot is one of the oldest national museums in the Netherlands, offering visitors a rich journey into medieval and 17th-century Dutch history. It was once home to the famous poet and historian P.C. Hooft, who transformed it into a cultural hub during the Dutch Golden Age. The castle grounds include beautifully maintained 17th-century gardens, a historic herb garden, and vibrant exhibitions that showcase its storied past.
