The House of Seafaring, or Haus der Seefahrt, is a historic landmark in Hamburg that reflects the city’s deep maritime heritage. Built in 1910 as a Kontorhaus, it stands at Hohe Brücke 1 between the Nikolaifleet and the old Deichstraße, its sandstone façade adorned with Jugendstil ornamentation and symbolic details such as reliefs of sea creatures and the bronze figure of Hammonia, Hamburg’s personification. Originally home to shipping and trading offices, the building embodied the city’s role as a Hanseatic hub and gateway to global commerce. Its architecture, with a steel-frame structure clad in stone, represents the transition from traditional design to modern functionality, while its decorative program celebrates Hamburg’s identity as a seafaring city.
