The St. Pauli Bunker, also known as the Feldstraße Bunker or Flakturm IV, is one of Hamburg’s most striking landmarks, rising above the Heiligengeistfeld between the Millerntor Stadium and the Karoviertel. Built in 1942 within just 300 days by forced laborers, the massive concrete structure was designed as an anti-aircraft tower and air-raid shelter, capable of protecting up to 25,000 people during the devastating bombings of World War II. With walls over three meters thick, it became an enduring reminder of the city’s wartime past. After the war, demolition proved impossible, and the bunker gradually found new life as a cultural and creative hub. Known for decades as the “Media Bunker,” it housed music clubs, studios, and event spaces, becoming a symbol of Hamburg’s alternative scene. In recent years, it has been transformed into the “Green Bunker,” crowned with a spectacular rooftop garden, hotel, and cultural venues. Today, the St. Pauli Bunker stands as both a memorial and a beacon of urban renewal, uniting remembrance, sustainability, and creativity in the heart of Hamburg.

This imposing World War II air raid shelter stands prominently near the U3 Feldstraße subway station, making it highly accessible. The bunker has been transformed into a vibrant cultural hub featuring a rooftop garden with panoramic views of the city, a bouldering hall, cafes, restaurants, and a hotel. Nearby attractions include the famous Reeperbahn entertainment district, the FC St. Pauli football stadium, St. Michael’s Church, and the St. Pauli Piers along the harbor.
