About

The Stintfang is a 26‑meter-high hill overlooking Hamburg’s Landungsbrücken, offering one of the city’s most iconic panoramic views of the Elbe and the busy harbor. Once part of the 17th‑century fortifications known as the Wallanlagen, it was expanded into the Bastion Albertus and played a key role in defending the city before the ramparts were later transformed into public parks. The name derives from the fish “Stint,” which was once caught in large numbers in the nearby waters. Today, the Stintfang is best known for its observation platform, where visitors gather to watch ships, ferries, and cruise liners pass by, as well as for the youth hostel that has welcomed travelers from around the world since the 1950s. Since 1995, the slope has also been home to Hamburg’s only vineyard, a gift from Stuttgart, where Regent grapes are cultivated and harvested in small quantities each year. Combining history, greenery, and sweeping vistas, the Stintfang is both a reminder of Hamburg’s fortified past and a beloved urban lookout that captures the city’s maritime spirit.

Stintfang is a prominent viewpoint located above the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken piers in Hamburg, offering stunning panoramic views of the bustling harbor, the Elbe River, and the city skyline. Situated on a hill easily accessible by a short climb or public transportation with Landungsbrücken U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations nearby, it serves as a peaceful spot for visitors to enjoy the maritime atmosphere. Close to Stintfang, travelers find the vibrant St. Pauli district with its nightlife and entertainment options, the historic landing stages and ferry terminals, the famous Reeperbahn street, and the scenic promenade along the waterfront. The area also includes the Jugendherberge Hamburg Auf dem Stintfang hostel, cafés, and restaurants, making it a central and lively base for exploring Hamburg’s harbor and cultural sites.
