The Fernsehturm Hamburg, officially named the Heinrich-Hertz-Turm, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and a defining feature of its skyline. Built between 1966 and 1968 and standing at 276.5 meters, it remains Hamburg’s tallest structure and was dedicated to the physicist Heinrich Hertz, who was born in the city. Locals affectionately call it the “Telemichel,” a nickname that reflects its place in everyday life. For decades, the tower was both a broadcasting hub and a popular attraction, with an observation deck and a revolving restaurant offering sweeping views over the Elbe, the port, and the city’s historic quarters. Closed to the public since 2001, the tower has continued to serve as a vital telecommunications site, transmitting radio, television, and mobile signals. Now under monument protection, it is undergoing extensive renovation, with plans to reopen its viewing platform and restaurant, restoring its role as a cultural and tourist highlight. Visible from nearly every corner of Hamburg, the Fernsehturm remains a powerful symbol of modernity, progress, and the city’s enduring connection to innovation and communication.

The tower is within easy reach of public transportation, with nearby stations including Baumwall and Meßberg.
