The Goethe-Museum Düsseldorf, housed in the elegant Schloss Jägerhof, is the only museum in the world dedicated entirely to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Germany’s most celebrated poet and thinker. Founded in 1956 and supported by the Anton and Katharina Kippenberg Foundation, the museum is based on what was once the largest private Goethe collection. Today it preserves more than 50,000 objects, including manuscripts, first editions, letters, portraits, and personal memorabilia such as a lock of Goethe’s hair. The permanent exhibition, titled Romanticism and Revolution, explores Goethe’s literary genius, his scientific interests, and his role as a cultural figure of European significance. Visitors can trace his life and works through rare documents and multimedia installations that bring his words and ideas vividly to life. The museum also houses a specialized research library with around 25,000 volumes, making it an important center for scholarship.
