Aaper Wald is Düsseldorf’s largest contiguous forest, offering a peaceful retreat rich in biodiversity and outdoor recreation. Covering over 200 hectares in the city’s northeast, Aaper Wald is part of the larger Grafenberg Forest and serves as a vital green lung for the urban area. Its gently rolling terrain, shaped by Ice Age loess deposits, features mixed deciduous and coniferous woodlands, meadows, and natural springs. The forest is crisscrossed by hiking and cycling trails, including the popular “Waldlehrpfad” nature trail with educational stations about local flora and fauna. Aaper Wald is also home to wildlife such as deer, foxes, and woodpeckers, making it a favorite for nature observation. The Heinrichs Ruh area within the forest honors the famous German poet Heinrich Heine, with benches and historical plaques.
