Rising above the egapark in Erfurt, the Zitadelle Cyriaksburg is a fortress with roots stretching back to the Middle Ages. Originally the site of a Benedictine convent founded in 1123, the hill was later transformed into a defensive stronghold. Between 1480 and 1604, the city constructed the Cyriaksburg to guard Erfurt’s western approaches and key trade routes. During the Thirty Years’ War, Gustav II Adolf of Sweden expanded it into a citadel, though its importance waned after the Petersberg fortress was built in 1664. Under Prussian rule in the 19th century, parts of the fortification were dismantled, yet its imposing walls remain a reminder of Erfurt’s strategic past. Today, the Cyriaksburg houses the German Horticultural Museum, blending military heritage with cultural discovery. Visitors can explore its grounds within the landscaped egapark, where history and horticulture meet in one of Erfurt’s most distinctive landmarks.

Zitadelle Cyriaksburg is located on the west side of Erfurt within ega Park, a sprawling botanical park at Gothaer Straße 38. The citadel is now home to the German Horticultural Museum, set amidst extensive themed gardens, Europe’s largest decorative flowerbed, and seasonal floral exhibitions. In the immediate vicinity are attractions such as the striking egapark flower beds, butterfly house, water features, and playgrounds, making the citadel part of one of Germany’s most significant green spaces. The tram and bus connections provide easy access to the city center, while the picturesque Hirschgarten and the historic Sibyllentürmchen column are also nearby for visitors to explore.
