Temppeliaukio Church, also known as the Rock Church, is one of Helsinki’s most remarkable architectural attractions, carved directly into solid granite in the Töölö district. Designed by brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen and consecrated in 1969, the church’s unique oval interior features rugged natural rock walls and a dramatic copper dome, its 22 kilometers of copper wire creating a warm, golden glow. Natural light floods the space through 180 glass panels encircling the dome, giving the sanctuary an airy yet intimate atmosphere. The exposed rock walls, left intentionally rough, provide outstanding acoustics, making the church a popular venue for concerts as well as worship. The minimalist furnishings and organ were also designed by the architects, ensuring harmony between architecture and function. There are no traditional bells; instead, a bell melody composed by Taneli Kuusisto is played through loudspeakers on the exterior wall. Above ground, only the copper dome and entrance are visible, blending the building into its urban landscape. Temppeliaukio Church stands as a celebrated symbol of modern Finnish design, drawing half a million visitors annually to experience its fusion of art, nature, and spirituality.
