Teatro Goldoni is one of Florence’s most atmospheric historic theatres, opened in 1817 on the site of the former Annalena monastery in the Oltrarno district. Designed by architect Giuseppe del Rosso, it was conceived as a modern, versatile venue combining an indoor theatre with an open‑air arena. Dedicated to playwright Carlo Goldoni, the theatre features a neoclassical façade on Via Santa Maria and an elegant horseshoe‑shaped auditorium with multiple tiers of boxes. Over the 19th century it became a lively centre for prose, music and opera, hosting the Società Filarmonica and later film festivals. After periods of decline, it was restored and reopened in 1997, preserving its intimate charm and strong acoustics. Today, Teatro Goldoni remains a treasured cultural space, offering concerts, theatre and community events in one of Florence’s most authentic neighbourhoods.
Florence ItalyTeatro Goldoni is located in the Oltrarno district of Florence at Via Santa Maria 15, 50125 Firenze, on the south bank of the Arno River. This historic 19th-century venue, once part of the former Annalena monastery, stands near the grand Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens, with the Ponte Vecchio and Uffizi Gallery just across the river for easy pedestrian access. The surrounding area features artisan workshops, the lively Santo Spirito neighbourhood, and Via de' Caldaie corner, ideal for pre-show strolls amid Florence's Renaissance charm.
