Giotto’s Bell Tower
Giotto’s Bell Tower rises beside Florence Cathedral as one of the finest examples of Florentine Gothic architecture. Designed by Giotto in 1334, the tower stands 84.7 metres high and is celebrated for its striking façade of white, green and pink marble. After Giotto’s death, the work continued under Andrea Pisano and was completed in 1359 by Francesco TalentiDuomo Di Firenze. The tower’s five levels are adorned with rich sculptural decorations, including reliefs and statues by masters such as Pisano and Donatello. Giotto’s Bell Tower stands in Piazza del Duomo, at the heart of Florence’s historic center, adjacent to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo) and sharing its iconic white, green, and red marble facade. Rising 84.7 meters with a 15-meter square base, its entrance is on the south side of the Cathedral complex, roughly 800 meters from Santa Maria Novella train station. Nearby landmarks include Brunelleschi’s Dome atop the Duomo, the Baptistery of San Giovanni with Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise, the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo housing original tower sculptures, and Palazzo Medici Riccardi just across the piazza, forming Florence’s religious and artistic core.
