Giardino dell'Iris
The Giardino dell’Iris is one of Florence’s most enchanting seasonal treasures, a hillside garden just below Piazzale Michelangelo dedicated entirely to the city’s symbolic flower. Open only for a few weeks each spring, it offers a rare chance to wander among more than a thousand varieties of irises from around the world, blooming in vivid purples, whites, yellows and soft pastels. Created in 1957 to host the International Iris Competition, the garden blends botanical beauty with sweeping views of Florence’s skyline, olive groves and terraced paths. Its tranquil atmosphere makes it a favourite escape for photographers, plant lovers and visitors seeking a quieter corner of the city. Though small and open for a limited time, the Giardino dell’Iris remains a unique celebration of Florence’s heritage and a fleeting spectacle of colour that returns each May.

Giardino dell’Iris is located on the corner of Viale dei Colli and Piazzale Michelangelo, on the hillside just below the famous panoramic square overlooking Florence’s historic centre. This secluded garden sits beside the scenic Viale Michelangiolo drive and is only a short walk from Piazzale Michelangelo’s terrace, renowned for its sweeping city views. Nearby are the Rose Garden (Giardino delle Rose), the Romanesque Basilica of San Miniato al Monte, and the monumental stairways and fountains of the Rampe del Poggi, making the area a compact cluster of gardens, viewpoints, and historic churches above the Arno.
