Teatro di Cestello is a beloved neighbourhood theatre in Florence’s San Frediano district, standing in the quiet Piazza di Cestello beside the church that gives it its name. Founded in the early 1900s as a small parish hall, it was later expanded and reopened in the late 1950s after wartime closure. Its story carries the scars of the devastating 1966 flood, which forced it to shut for nearly two decadesFeel Florence+1. Thanks to the determination of Vittorio Nardini, the theatre reopened in 1985 and has since grown into one of the city’s most active cultural hubs. With around 140 seats, it offers an intimate setting for vernacular theatre, contemporary productions, and community performances. Today, Teatro di Cestello remains a vital artistic anchor in the Oltrarno, preserving local traditions while welcoming new creative voices.
