Torre del Oro
Torre del Oro is one of Seville’s most recognisable landmarks, rising beside the Guadalquivir River with a history that blends legend and strategic power. Built in the early 13th century during Almohad rule, the tower once formed part of the city’s defensive walls, guarding access to the port and controlling river traffic. Its name, often linked to the golden shimmer of its original lime‑and‑straw coating, adds a layer of mystery to its imposing silhouette. Over the centuries it has served as a watchtower, prison, and naval archive, reflecting Seville’s long maritime heritage. Today it houses a small naval museum and offers panoramic views from its upper terrace, making it a favourite stop for visitors exploring the riverfront and the city’s layered past.
