Iglesia de la Magdalena is one of Córdoba’s oldest and most atmospheric churches, a quiet treasure that reflects the city’s medieval soul. Built in the 13th century after the Christian conquest, it forms part of the group of Fernandine churches commissioned by King Ferdinand III. Its architecture blends Romanesque and early Gothic elements, with a striking façade marked by a rose window and a simple yet powerful stone presence. Inside, the church reveals a serene space shaped by pointed arches, austere walls, and traces of later artistic additions that speak to centuries of devotion. Although no longer used for regular worship, the building has been carefully restored and now serves as a cultural venue, hosting exhibitions and events that highlight its historic character. Iglesia de la Magdalena stands as a testament to Córdoba’s layered past, offering visitors a peaceful encounter with the city’s early Christian heritage and architectural evolution.
Córdoba SpainIglesia de la Magdalena is located on Plaza de la Magdalena, just east of Córdoba’s historic centre in the traditional La Magdalena neighbourhood, within the Axerquía area close to the old city walls. Around the church you will find quiet residential streets leading towards the districts of San Pedro, San Andrés and San Lorenzo, with nearby plazas, traditional houses, local cafés and a short walk connecting you to Plaza de la Corredera, the commercial heart of the centre and, further on, the Mosque‑Cathedral and riverside.
