Castelo dos Governadores, also known as the Governors’ Castle, is one of Lagos’s most emblematic historical structures, standing near the old town walls and overlooking the waterfront. Although only parts of the original fortification remain, the site preserves the memory of Lagos’s strategic importance during the Age of Discoveries. Its most striking feature is the Manueline‑style window, a rare architectural gem that reflects Portugal’s maritime splendour in the 16th century. The castle once served as the residence of the governors responsible for defending the Algarve coast, and its walls witnessed key moments in the region’s military and political history. Castelo dos Governadores is located at Rua do Castelo dos Governadores in the heart of Lagos, Algarve region of southern Portugal, forming part of the ancient city walls along the waterfront near Jardim da Constituição. This medieval fortress, enhanced in the 17th century and later damaged by the 1755 earthquake, guards the historic old town close to landmarks including the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira across the harbor entrance, Igreja de Santa Maria, Mercado de Escravos slave market museum, Museu de Lagos Dr. José Formosinho, Centro Cultural de Lagos, vibrant Praça Gil Eanes, Centro Ciência Viva science center, and beaches like Praia da Batata and Meia Praia.
