Castelo de Guimarães is located atop Monte Largo hill overlooking Campo de São Mamede in the historic center of Guimarães, northern Portugal, forming the northern anchor of the UNESCO World Heritage old town. Built in the 10th century by Mumadona Dias to defend the nearby monastery, this Romanesque fortress with Gothic towers symbolizes Portugal's birth as the legendary birthplace of King Afonso Henriques.
