Casa das Rótulas is one of Guimarães’ most distinctive historic houses, admired for its rare wooden bay windows that project gracefully over the street. Dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, the building reflects the traditional urban architecture of the Minho region, where craftsmanship and practicality shaped the character of domestic spaces. The rotating wooden panels, or “rótulas,” allowed residents to observe the street discreetly while controlling light and ventilation, offering a glimpse into daily life in past centuries. Casa das Rótulas is located at coordinates 41°26′38″N 8°17′40″W in the Oliveira do Castelo area of Guimarães’ UNESCO-listed historic centre, northern Portugal. This early 17th-century Mannerist house, renowned for its wooden lattice balconies (rótulas) allowing discreet viewing, stands in the charming Largo Dr. Mota Prego alongside the Tanque de Santo António fountain. Nearby, the Casa Navarros de Andrade housing the Alfredo Pimenta Municipal Archive adjoins it, while Largo dos Laranjais with its orange grove and Alberto Sampaio monument unfolds just beyond Rua Gravador Molarinho.
