The Muralhas de Guimarães are among the city’s most recognisable symbols, evoking the medieval origins of Portugal’s birthplace. Built between the 10th and 13th centuries, the walls once formed a protective ring around the early settlement that grew around the castle and the monastery founded by Countess Mumadona Dias. Their granite towers and battlements reflect the defensive needs of the time, guarding the population and asserting the strategic importance of Guimarães in the formation of the Portuguese kingdom. Today, only sections of the original circuit remain, but they still create a powerful visual link to the past, especially the iconic stretch near the castle crowned by the phrase “Aqui Nasceu Portugal.” Walking alongside the surviving walls offers a vivid sense of the city’s evolution, where ancient fortifications blend seamlessly with the modern urban landscape. The Muralhas de Guimarães stand as enduring guardians of memory and identity.
Guimarães Portugal
Muralhas de Guimarães encircles the UNESCO-listed historic centre of Guimarães in northern Portugal, primarily along Avenida Conde de Margarido Soares Carneiro and Rua da Rainha Dona Maria II in the Oliveira, São Paio e São Sebastião parish. Constructed between 1265 and 1318 under Kings Afonso III and Dinis I, this 2 km medieval defensive wall originally featured 12 gates and towers, with the best-preserved stretch visible near the castle atop Monte da Penha. Nearby, Guimarães Castle and Igreja de São Miguel do Castelo stand directly adjacent uphill, while Paço dos Duques de Bragança lies 200 meters south; the atmospheric old town unfolds below with Largo da Oliveira, Padrão do Salado, Praça de São Tiago, and Torre dos Almadas all within a 500-meter radius.
