Location

Monte de Santa Catarina, also known as Monte da Penha, rises as Guimarães' highest point at 613 meters above sea level, located in the Costa parish on the eastern outskirts of the city in northern Portugal. Accessible via the Teleférico da Penha cable car from Praceta de São Gonçalo near the historic centre or by winding roads, its forested summit offers sweeping panoramic views stretching to the ocean on clear days. Atop the hill stands the Santuário da Penha with its modern church and towering Pope Pius IX statue, alongside granite rock shelters, Gruta de Nossa Senhora do Carmo chapel, and trails leading to Miradouro da Penha viewpoint and Capela de São Cristóvão. Nearby downhill, Guimarães Castle and Paço dos Duques crown the adjacent heights about 3 km west, while the UNESCO-listed historic centre with Largo da Oliveira, Padrão do Salado, and lively squares unfolds roughly 4-5 km away, blending rural sanctuary with urban heritage.
