The Aqueduto da Água de Prata is one of Évora’s most striking landmarks, a 16th‑century engineering masterpiece that once carried fresh water from the countryside into the walled city. Designed under the direction of architect Francisco de Arruda, also known for Lisbon’s Belém Tower, the aqueduct stretches for kilometres, gradually rising into elegant arches as it approaches the historic centre. Its rhythm of stone arcades blends seamlessly with the urban fabric, where houses and shops were later built directly into its structure. Although no longer essential to the city’s water supply, the aqueduct remains a powerful symbol of Évora’s ingenuity and resilience. Walking alongside it reveals both the scale of Renaissance ambition and the quiet beauty of a monument that has shaped the city for centuries.

Aqueduto da Água de Prata is located in Évora, in Portugal’s Alentejo region, forming part of the historic city and its UNESCO World Heritage core. It runs in from the countryside north of Évora and becomes especially visible on the north‑western side of the city, where its tall arches approach the medieval walls and the ring road. Nearby you will find Évora’s historic centre with landmarks such as the Roman Temple, the Cathedral, Praça do Giraldo, the medieval walls and towers, and several convents and palaces that lie within about a kilometre of the urban stretch of the aqueduct.
