Built in the 16th century as part of the Aqueduto da Água de Prata network, this stone water box functioned as a distribution point, regulating the flow of fresh water brought from the countryside into the urban centre. Its compact, almost fortress‑like form contrasts with the grand arches of the aqueduct, revealing the practical engineering that supported daily life in Renaissance Évora. Though no longer in use, the structure remains an evocative reminder of the city’s ingenuity and the sophisticated hydraulic system that sustained its growth. This 16th-century water reservoir, part of the Aqueduto da Água de Prata, sits amid charming narrow streets near key landmarks including Praça do Giraldo with its fountain, the Arco Romano de Dona Isabel, Igreja de Santo Antão, the Clock Museum, and the Roman Temple, all within a few hundred metres for easy exploration on foot. The site blends seamlessly into the medieval urban fabric, close to noble houses and the city’s medieval walls.
