The Igreja de Santiago is one of Coimbra’s oldest and most atmospheric churches, standing at the heart of the historic Baixa district. Dating back to the late 12th century, it reflects the transition from Romanesque to early Gothic, with a simple yet striking façade marked by its sculpted portal and elegant archivolts. Once an important stop for pilgrims travelling along the Portuguese Way of St. James, the church has long been woven into the city’s spiritual and commercial life. Inside, later renovations introduced Baroque altarpieces and decorative elements that contrast with the building’s medieval origins, creating a layered sense of time.
