St. Charles Borromeo Church is one of Antwerp’s most dazzling Baroque landmarks, built by the Jesuits between 1615 and 1621 at the height of the Counter‑Reformation. Its façade, inspired by Italian Baroque architecture, brings a sense of theatrical grandeur to Hendrik Conscienceplein, where the church stands like a slice of Rome in the heart of the city. Inside, the atmosphere deepens with refined marble, warm woodwork, and a two‑storey interior that once showcased dozens of paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, who contributed both as an artistic collaborator and designer. Although many original ceiling paintings were lost to fire, the church retains its powerful visual impact, especially in the Rubens Chapel and the richly decorated Lady Chapel. Visitors can also explore the crypt, sacristy, and even subterranean canals, adding layers of intrigue to the experience. Today, the church remains active as a place of worship and as home to the Community of Sant’Egidio, continuing its long tradition of spirituality, art, and community life.
