Sterckshof Castle stands as a striking example of Flemish Renaissance architecture, located in the heart of the lush Rivierenhof park in the Deurne district of Antwerp. Its history dates back to the 13th century when it began as a simple farmstead, but it truly gained prominence in the 16th century under the ownership of Gerard Sterck, a wealthy merchant and financier to the Spanish court. Sterck transformed the property into a grand aristocratic estate, and it is from him that the castle takes its name. With its iconic red brickwork, elegant crow-stepped gables, and graceful turrets reflected in the surrounding moat, the castle offers a quintessential fairytale image of old Flanders. While the structure appears ancient, much of the castle seen today is a meticulously crafted reconstruction from the 1930s. The original building suffered heavy damage during the religious wars of the late 16th century and slowly fell into ruin over the following centuries. The restoration project in the early 20th century was intended to bring the estate back to its former glory, focusing on historical accuracy and traditional craftsmanship. For several decades, the castle was famous for housing a prestigious silver museum, though it has since transitioned into a more private role.
