Tucked away behind a nondescript door in the heart of Antwerp’s old center lies the Vlaeykensgang, a secret alleyway that feels like a portal to the late 16th century. While the city's grand squares are filled with the noise of modern life, this hidden passage offers a sudden, hushed transition into a world of whitewashed walls, winding cobblestones, and creeping ivy. Historically, this narrow corridor was far from a luxury destination; it was the humble home of shoemakers and the bell ringers of the nearby Cathedral. Because it was hidden from the main streets, it served as a place for the city's less fortunate to find shelter in the dense urban landscape. The alley’s survival is something of a miracle. In the 1960s, it faced demolition to make way for modern parking lots, but it was saved by the antique dealer Axel Vervoordt, who restored it with meticulous care. Today, the Vlaeykensgang has transformed from a crowded slum into one of the most romantic spots in Antwerp. It now houses fine-dining restaurants and art galleries, yet it retains its quiet, medieval atmosphere.

This enchanting 16th-century cobblestone passage from 1591, once home to shoemakers and poor families, features ivy-clad brick houses, quiet courtyards with a Christ statue, and authentic back buildings now housing antique shops, art galleries, and upscale restaurants like De Vlaeykensgang serving Flemish cuisine. Nearby icons include the Cathedral of Our Lady mere meters away, Grote Markt's City Hall and guildhalls to the west, bustling Groenplaats square with cafes southwards, Rubens House 400m distant, and riverside Het Steen; pedestrian streets teem with bars and trams at Groenplaats, offering an intimate time capsule amid Antwerp's vibrant historic core. ​
