Kuopio Museum

Kuopio Museum is one of Kuopio’s most distinctive cultural landmarks, housed in an Art Nouveau building completed in 1907 on the edge of Snellman Park. Its castle‑inspired architecture, designed by J. V. Strömberg, reflects Finland’s National Romantic style and makes the museum the third oldest purpose‑built museum building in the country. Inside, the museum brings together natural history and cultural heritage, offering renewed permanent exhibitions that explore the history of Northern Savo and the changing nature of Eastern Finland. A highlight for many visitors is the life‑sized woolly mammoth “Häkä,” a meticulously crafted reconstruction that has become an enduring favourite. Following a major renovation and the addition of a contemporary extension opened in 2021, the museum now blends historic character with modern exhibition spaces. Today, Kuopio Museum stands as a dynamic centre for learning, regional identity and engaging cultural experiences.
