St. Nicholas Cathedral is the principal Orthodox church in Kuopio and the seat of the Diocese of Karelia, standing in the Väinölänniemi district as one of the city’s most distinctive sacred landmarks. Completed in 1903 and consecrated in 1904, it was designed by Aleksander Isakson in an Old Russian style softened by Western influences. Its exterior, plastered and painted to resemble red brick, echoes the appearance of contemporary garrison churches, while the interior combines wood panelling, warm colours, and a richly crafted iconostasis made in St. Petersburg. The cathedral’s icons include works from earlier wooden churches and rare pieces dating back to the 18th century, creating a layered sense of heritage. Renovated in 2003–2004, the building was restored to its original early‑20th‑century character. Today it remains an active place of worship and a central symbol of Orthodox life in Eastern Finland.
