RIISA – Orthodox Church Museum of Finland in Kuopio is one of Europe’s most significant museums dedicated to Orthodox heritage, preserving centuries of sacred art and cultural history. Founded in 1957, its roots trace back to the Collection of Ancient Objects established at the Valamo Monastery in 1911, with many treasures arriving in Kuopio after the wartime evacuations of Karelian parishes and monasteries. The museum’s collections include icons, liturgical vessels, textiles, rare books and extensive archival material, with many pieces dating from the 16th to 19th centuries and some even earlier. Exhibitions explore themes from Byzantine traditions to the development of Orthodoxy in Finland, presenting both historical artefacts and contemporary interpretations. Housed in a modern building designed in 1969 and renewed in 2015, RIISA offers a serene, contemplative environment where visitors can encounter the depth and beauty of Orthodox visual culture.
