Kuopio Market Square, known locally as Mualiman Napa – the “navel of the world” – is the lively heart of the city and a cherished meeting place for locals and visitors alike. Established in its current location in 1856, it has grown from a once‑remote trading ground into Finland’s largest and most vibrant market square, surrounded by historic buildings such as the Neo‑Renaissance City Hall and the classicist Kuopio Lyceum. The square’s open stalls offer seasonal produce, handmade crafts, flowers, and the region’s famous kalakukko, while the adjacent Art Nouveau Market Hall provides a cosy indoor extension filled with local delicacies. Throughout the year, the square hosts traditional markets, festivals, and community events, creating an atmosphere that shifts with the seasons yet always reflects the warm, easygoing spirit of Savo culture. Today it remains an essential starting point for exploring Kuopio and experiencing its everyday life.

Kuopio Market Square (Kuopion kauppatori) lies in the heart of Kuopio’s city centre at the intersection of Kauppakatu, Puijonkatu, Tulliportinkatu and Haapaniemenkatu, about 100 metres above sea level in the Multimäki district. The square is just a short walk from the main shopping street Kauppakatu and the central waterfront promenade, while the Kuopio Market Hall, Kuopio Town Hall and local cafés and restaurants surround its edges. Nearby you also find Kuopio Cathedral, Snellman Park, the Per Brahe Memorial and the main bus station area, making the market square a convenient starting point for exploring the city’s cultural and leisure attractions.
