Slottsfjelltårnet stands on Slottsfjellet hill in central Tønsberg, overlooking the city and fjord. Built in 1888 to mark the 1000th anniversary of Tønsberg, the 17-metre stone tower crowns the ruins of medieval Tunsberghus, once Scandinavia’s largest castle and a royal residence. The area around Slottsfjelltårnet is the historic heart of Norway’s oldest city. Directly beside the tower is Slottsfjellsmuseet, where Viking ships, whaling history, local art, and a recreated traditional farm at Vestfoldtunet bring Vestfold’s past to life. The museum’s WWII bunker inside the mountain and the path up to the tower are only minutes apart, connecting exhibitions with panoramic views. From the top you see 360-degree vistas of Tønsberg, the Oslofjord, Nøtterøy, and Færder islands. A short walk down the hill brings you to Tønsberg Cathedral, the 1858 neo-Gothic church in the city centre, and Haugar Vestfold Kunstmuseum, housed in the 1921 former Seamen’s School with contemporary art set among ancient burial mounds.
