Tønsberg Maritime Historic Centre

About

Tønsberg Maritime Historic Centre offers an engaging window into the city’s long relationship with shipbuilding, seafaring and coastal trade. Located near the harbour, the centre highlights Tønsberg’s role as one of Norway’s oldest maritime hubs, presenting exhibitions that trace local craftsmanship, navigation and life at sea. Visitors can explore traditional boatbuilding techniques, study historic vessels and learn how the region’s shipyards shaped both commerce and culture over the centuries. The atmosphere is hands‑on and authentic, with workshops, displays and reconstructed environments that bring maritime history to life. The centre also connects to the surrounding waterfront, where preserved boats and outdoor installations extend the experience beyond the exhibition halls. Together, these elements create a vivid portrait of a community built on the sea, making the Tønsberg Maritime Historic Centre an essential stop for anyone interested in Norway’s coastal heritage.
