Vestfoldtunet is an atmospheric open‑air section of Slottsfjellsmuseet, offering a vivid glimpse into traditional rural life in the Vestfold region. Set within a peaceful landscape near the foot of Slottsfjellet, it gathers historic farm buildings relocated from across the county, each carefully restored to reflect everyday life from the 17th to the 19th century. Visitors can wander among timber houses, barns and storehouses, gaining a sense of how communities once lived, worked and organised their farms. Seasonal activities, demonstrations and cultural events often animate the site, adding sound, movement and craftsmanship to the experience. The setting feels both intimate and authentic, with grassy yards and old fruit trees enhancing the impression of stepping back in time. As part of Tønsberg’s wider museum landscape, Vestfoldtunet offers a warm, tangible connection to regional heritage and the rhythms of rural Norway.
Tønsberg Norway
Vestfoldtunet is located at Farmannsveien 30 in Tønsberg, at the foot of Slottsfjellet mountain just minutes from the city centre. The traditional cluster farm is an open-air museum and part of Slottsfjellsmuseet, preserving Vestfold’s rural building heritage with historic timber houses, farm buildings, and cultural landscapes. The area around Vestfoldtunet puts you in the historic heart of Norway’s oldest city. Directly adjacent is Slottsfjellsmuseet, where Viking ships, local art, whaling history, and a recreated medieval farm are displayed, plus the World War II bunker inside the mountain. Climb the path up Slottsfjellet to Slottsfjellstårnet, the Castle Rock Tower built in 1888 on medieval castle ruins, for panoramic 360-degree views of Tønsberg, the fjord, and surrounding islands. The hill is the site of the former Tunsberg Castle, one of Norway’s most important medieval fortresses. A short walk brings you to Tønsberg Cathedral, a neo-Gothic church from 1858, and Haugar Vestfold Kunstmuseum, housed in the 1921 Seamen’s School with 12 larvikite caryatids and contemporary art exhibitions. Down by the harbor is Brygga i Tønsberg, the lively waterfront with restaurants, boats, and summer concerts at Foynhagen.
