Slottsfjellsmuseet

About

Slottsfjellsmuseet in Tønsberg offers a vivid journey through Norway’s medieval and maritime past, set at the foot of the iconic Slottsfjellet hill. The museum explores the history of the former royal castle that once dominated the ridge above, presenting archaeological finds, models and exhibits that bring the fortress and the city’s Viking‑era significance to life. Its collections range from everyday objects to rare artefacts that trace Tønsberg’s development as one of Norway’s oldest towns. Visitors can also learn about whaling history, coastal culture and regional traditions, making the museum a broad cultural gateway rather than a single‑theme institution. The surrounding park and the short walk up to the Slottsfjell Tower complement the visit, offering sweeping views over the city and fjord. Together, the museum and its landscape create a rich, engaging encounter with Tønsberg’s long and layered heritage.

Location

Slottsfjellsmuseet is located on Slottsfjellet, the historic hill in the heart of Tønsberg, Vestfold. The museum sits just a short walk from the city centre and offers exhibitions on Viking heritage, medieval history, and the famous Oseberg ship found nearby. The area around Slottsfjellsmuseet is rich in history, culture, and views. Right next to the museum stands Slottsfjellstårnet, the Castle Rock Tower, built in 1888 on medieval ruins. Climb to the top for 360-degree panoramas of Tønsberg, the fjord, and the surrounding islands. The hill itself is dotted with remains of Tønsberg Castle, once one of Norway’s most important medieval fortresses, and you can wander paths that tell the story of the city’s role from the Viking Age through the civil war era. Within easy walking distance you’ll find Tønsberg Cathedral, a neo-Gothic church from 1858, and Haugar Art Museum, which showcases contemporary Norwegian art in a former seamen’s school. Down by the harbor is Brygga i Tønsberg, the lively waterfront with restaurants, boats, and outdoor concerts at Foynhagen. Vikingodden lies along Ollebukta, where full-scale replicas of the Oseberg Viking Ship and Klåstad ship are on display, and you can even try sailing a longship in summer.
