Sem Church is located in the village of Sem, about 5 kilometres west of Tønsberg city centre in Vestfold. Vestfold’s oldest stone church, it was built before 1100 in Romanesque style and originally served as a parish church for the royal Sem Manor. The white stone church seats about 211 and features a medieval crucifix, wooden Madonna sculpture, pulpit from 1591, and a reconstructed altarpiece with a modern painting. The area around Sem Church blends history, nature, and modern life. Immediately nearby is Jarlsberg Manor, the historic estate of the Wedel-Jarlsberg family, with its park and the Det wedelske gravkapell burial chapel for the noble family visible near the church. Jarlsberg Travbane, one of Norway’s main harness racing tracks, sits just 1.5 km southwest and hosts races and events year-round. Tønsberg Airport, also known as Jarlsberg Airport, is close by for small aircraft and gliding. A short drive brings you to Tønsberg’s city centre and its major attractions.
