Tønsberg Norway
Haugar Kunstmuseum is located on Haugar hill at Gråbrødregaten 17 in the heart of Tønsberg. The contemporary art museum is housed in the former Seamen’s School, an impressive brick building from 1921 adorned with 12 larvikite caryatids, set in park-like surroundings between the old Viking assembly site Haugating and ancient burial mounds. The area around Haugar places you in the historic core of Norway’s oldest city. Just a short walk away is Slottsfjellet, where Slottsfjellsmuseet, Slottsfjellstårnet, and the ruins of Tønsberg Castle crown the hill with 360-degree views of the fjord and town. The medieval fortress site tells the story of Tønsberg’s role from the Viking Age through the civil war era, and the tower is only minutes from the museum. Nearby Tønsberg Cathedral, built in 1858, anchors the city centre with its neo-Gothic spire. Down toward the harbor you’ll find Brygga i Tønsberg, the lively waterfront with restaurants, boats, and outdoor stages at Foynhagen. Vikingodden at Ollebukta displays full-scale replicas of the Oseberg Viking Ship and Klåstad ship, and you can even try sailing a longship in summer. The Oseberghaugen Royal Mound, where the famous 9th-century ship was unearthed, lies a few kilometers outside town.
