Location

The University of Tartu Art Museum is located at Ülikooli tn 18, 50090 Tartu, in the left wing of the historic main building of the University of Tartu in the city center. Founded in 1803, it is Estonia’s oldest museum and showcases a permanent exhibition of full-scale plaster replicas of Greek archaic, classical, and Hellenistic sculptures acquired in the 1860s from museums in England, Germany, France, and Italy. The halls are decorated with Pompeian-style ornamental paintings from 1868, and the collection also features authentic ancient originals, including Egyptian mummies, coins, vases, clay lamps, and cuneiform tablets. Since 2017, the mummies are displayed in a unique chamber painted like an Egyptian tomb. Visitors can also access the university’s historic attic lock-up, where students who broke rules were detained, and 19th-century graffiti still covers the walls. What’s nearby: Stepping outside places you in the heart of Tartu’s cultural and historic core. Just a short walk away is Tartu Town Hall Square, the city’s lively main plaza lined with cafés, the iconic leaning building that houses the Tartu Art Museum, and the famous Kissing Students fountain. Head uphill to Toome Hill (Toomemägi Park), a green oasis with walking paths, scenic views, and the impressive ruins of Tartu Cathedral, which also hosts the University of Tartu Museum.
