TYPA letterpress and paper art centre

About

TYPA in Tartu is a vibrant centre dedicated to letterpress, printmaking, and paper art, celebrating the craft traditions that shaped the history of communication. Set in a former industrial building, it preserves the atmosphere of an old print shop, with working presses, metal type, and tools that invite visitors into the tactile world of analogue printing. The museum‑studio blends exhibition space with active workshops, allowing guests to see how paper is made, how type is set by hand, and how prints come to life through ink and pressure. Artists in residence add a contemporary dimension, experimenting with traditional techniques in fresh, creative ways. TYPA’s mix of heritage, craftsmanship, and hands‑on discovery makes it one of Tartu’s most distinctive cultural spaces, offering a rare chance to experience the beauty of slow, manual creation in a digital age.

Location

TYPA Letterpress and Paper Art Centre is located at Kastani tn 48f, 50410 Tartu, in a former boot factory in the city center. This unique private museum-studio keeps historic letterpress machines, papermaking equipment, and bookbinding tools running, offering hands-on tours where visitors make their own paper, print postcards, and learn 2,000 years of printing history from traditional techniques to the digital age. Founded in 2010 to preserve Estonia’s print heritage, TYPA functions as a museum, gallery, artist residency, and workshop space with temporary exhibitions, a shop of handmade notebooks, and a friendly resident cat. Tours start every hour and are suitable for families, while the working presses and interactive studios make it one of Tartu’s most engaging cultural stops.
