Martin Luther Cathedral

About

Martin Luther Cathedral is one of Daugavpils’ most recognisable sacred landmarks, standing on the city’s hilltop since the late 19th century. Built between 1893 and 1897 for the growing Lutheran community, it reflects the influence of German and Baltic architectural traditions, with a tall neo‑Gothic spire that once served as a visual guide for travellers approaching the city. The cathedral’s red‑brick façade, pointed arches, and slender windows give it a striking vertical rhythm, while the interior is noted for its wooden ceiling, simple altar design, and calm, light‑filled atmosphere. An interesting fact is that the church was originally named after St. Peter; it received the name of Martin Luther only in the 20th century, symbolically linking it to the roots of the Reformation. Despite wars and political upheavals, the cathedral survived with minimal damage and remained an active centre of Lutheran life throughout the Soviet period. Today it continues to serve the local congregation and welcomes visitors drawn to its serene setting, panoramic views, and enduring role in the spiritual landscape of Daugavpils.
