Inženieru arsenāls is one of the most atmospheric and historically significant buildings within the Daugavpils Fortress, reflecting the military engineering traditions of the Russian Empire. Built in the mid‑19th century, it originally served as an arsenal and workshop complex where military engineers repaired weapons, produced equipment, and maintained the technical infrastructure of the vast citadel. Its massive brick walls, arched interiors, and functional layout reveal the fortress’s role as a self‑sufficient military town capable of supporting long‑term defence operations. An interesting fact is that the building once housed specialised workshops for artillery maintenance, making it a key strategic facility during the fortress’s active years. Despite wars, regime changes, and periods of neglect, the structure survived with much of its original character intact. Today, Inženieru arsenāls is undergoing gradual revitalisation, with parts of the building used for cultural events, exhibitions, and creative initiatives that bring new life to the historic complex. Its blend of industrial heritage and fortress architecture makes it a compelling stop for visitors exploring Daugavpils’ military past.
Daugavpils Latvia
Inženieru arsenāls, also known as the Engineering Arsenal, is located inside Daugavpils Fortress in the western part of Daugavpils, within the historic 19th‑century military complex along Imperatora Street. It occupies one of the fortress’ large brick arsenal buildings and now serves as a centre of technics and industrial design with exhibitions of retro vehicles and industrial objects. The fortress around it is a major attraction in its own right, with star‑shaped earth ramparts, bastions and impressive gates that invite visitors to walk and explore the former defensive lines. Just a short walk away inside the same complex is the Mark Rothko Art Centre, dedicated to the famous abstract expressionist born in Daugavpils. Nearby you can also find the Daugavpils Fortress Culture and Information Centre, smaller museums, art spaces and scenic paths along the defensive dam by the Daugava River, making a visit to Inženieru arsenāls part of a full day in this historic district.
