Orthodox Cathedral of Saints Boris and Gleb

About

The Orthodox Cathedral of Saints Boris and Gleb is one of Daugavpils’ most striking religious monuments, rising above the city with its blue domes and elegant neo‑Russian design. Built between 1904 and 1905, it was commissioned for the soldiers of the nearby fortress, making it closely tied to the military history of the region. Its architecture reflects the revivalist style popular in the late Russian Empire, with ornate façades, onion domes, and a richly decorated interior centred around a traditional iconostasis. One of the cathedral’s most interesting features is its unusual scale: it is one of the largest Orthodox churches in Latvia outside Riga, capable of accommodating thousands of worshippers. Despite political upheavals, closures, and wartime challenges, the building survived intact and was returned to the Orthodox community after Latvia regained independence. Today it remains an active spiritual centre and a key landmark of Daugavpils, admired for its serene atmosphere, impressive acoustics, and the way its domes catch the changing light over the city.

Location

The Orthodox Cathedral of Saints Boris and Gleb is the main Orthodox church in Daugavpils, located in the Jaunbūve district on Church Hill, a little east of the compact city centre. Its pale façades, blue domes and golden cupolas make it one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city skyline. Church Hill itself is a unique ensemble where four different Christian churches stand close together, symbolising the multicultural character of Daugavpils. Alongside the Orthodox cathedral you will find the Roman Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception and the Martin Luther Lutheran Cathedral, all within a short walking distance. From the cathedral it is easy to reach several green areas such as Central Park and nearby residential streets that lead back towards the heart of the city. With a short ride or longer walk you can also access major attractions including Daugavpils Fortress, the Mark Rothko Art Centre, the Šmakovka Museum and the Daugavpils Local History and Art Museum, allowing you to combine religious architecture with culture, history and art in one visit.
