Latgale Zoo

About

Latgale Zoo is one of Daugavpils’ most distinctive attractions, a compact yet remarkably diverse urban zoo founded in 1989 by local biologists passionate about conservation. Originally created as an educational centre, it grew from a small terrarium into a fully developed zoo specialising in reptiles, amphibians, and exotic invertebrates. Its rainforest‑themed interior, complete with lush vegetation and warm, humid air, offers an immersive experience unusual for a zoo of its size. One of the zoo’s most interesting features is its focus on breeding rare species, including poison dart frogs, tropical lizards, and endangered turtles. Many of these animals are part of international conservation programmes, making the zoo an important contributor to global biodiversity efforts. Visitors can also encounter mammals such as meerkats and raccoons, as well as a variety of birds and fish. Despite its modest footprint, Latgale Zoo is known for its hands‑on educational approach, inviting guests to learn about ecosystems, responsible pet care, and the delicate balance of nature. It remains a beloved destination for families, students, and nature enthusiasts.

Location

Latgale Zoo is a small municipal zoological garden in Daugavpils, located just off Vienības Street, close to the city centre and main shopping area. It is housed indoors, creating an intimate “urban jungle” atmosphere where visitors can see reptiles, fish, small mammals and exotic invertebrates from a very close distance, making it especially appealing for families with children. Right outside the zoo you step back onto one of the city’s central streets, lined with cafés, small shops and everyday local life. Within a short walk you can reach Dubrovin Park, a historic green space with a large fountain and lawns that invite a relaxed stroll. Also nearby is the Šmakovka Museum, which presents the story of Latgale’s traditional spirit using modern multimedia exhibits, and the Daugavpils Local History and Art Museum, where you can explore the cultural and natural heritage of the region. From this compact area it is easy to continue further to Vienības Square, Unity House and Daugavpils Theatre, allowing you to combine the zoo with wider sightseeing in a single day.
