The Regional Museum in Český Krumlov is one of the town’s cultural treasures, housed in a former Jesuit seminary that adds historical depth to every exhibition. A particularly charming fact is that the museum owns one of the largest ceramic nativity scenes in the country, crafted by local artist Josef Procházka. With hundreds of hand‑modelled figures, it captures not only biblical stories but also scenes of traditional South Bohemian life. Inside, visitors can explore a wide range of displays tracing the region’s development from prehistoric settlements to the flourishing Renaissance period under the Rosenbergs. Archaeological finds—tools, ornaments, and pottery—reveal how people lived along the Vltava River for thousands of years. The ethnographic section showcases colourful folk costumes, musical instruments, and household items that reflect the area’s rural traditions. A highlight is the detailed scale model of Český Krumlov’s historic centre, offering a unique bird’s‑eye view of the town’s winding streets and castle complex. Together, the exhibitions create a vivid portrait of a region shaped by craftsmanship, trade, and centuries of cultural exchange.
Český Krumlov Czech Republic
The Regional Museum in Český Krumlov is set in the heart of this UNESCO-listed town in South Bohemia. You’ll find it on Horní Street, just off the main Svornosti Square in the historic Old Town. The museum occupies a former Baroque Jesuit seminary building, so the architecture alone is worth seeing. Inside, the museum traces the history and culture of the Český Krumlov region. The most famous exhibit is a large ceramic model of the town as it looked around 1800, showing every street and house in detail. Other displays cover prehistoric settlements, medieval crafts, Baroque art, and life under the powerful Rosenberg and Schwarzenberg families. There’s also an ethnographic section with folk costumes, furniture, and tools from rural South Bohemia. You can’t get more central. Český Krumlov Castle and its tower are a 5-minute walk away, with the Baroque theater, castle gardens, and bear moat to explore. The Vltava River curves around the Old Town, offering raft and canoe rentals with views of the castle cliffs. Svornosti Square is lined with Renaissance houses, cafés, and shops. Also close by are the Egon Schiele Art Centrum, the Monastery Museum, and the Museum Fotoatelier Seidel. Everything is easily reached on foot through the town’s cobblestone lanes.
