Museum Fotoatelier Seidel

About

Museum Fotoatelier Seidel in Český Krumlov is one of the most atmospheric photographic museums in Central Europe, preserving an authentic early‑20th‑century studio almost exactly as it once operated. A fascinating fact is that the Seidel family documented life across the Šumava region for decades, creating an invaluable visual archive of villages, traditions, and landscapes—many of which no longer exist in their original form. Inside, visitors step directly into a preserved working environment: original cameras, glass‑plate negatives, hand‑painted backdrops, and retouching tools reveal the meticulous craft behind early photography. The darkroom, with its vintage equipment and chemical bottles, offers a rare look at the technical side of the profession before digital imaging. One of the highlights is the extensive collection of postcards produced by the Seidel studio, showcasing the region’s architecture and daily life with remarkable clarity. Personal items—diaries, letters, and family photographs—add an intimate layer to the story, showing the human side of a business that shaped local memory.
