Revolving Auditorium Český Krumlov

About

The Revolving Auditorium in Český Krumlov is one of Europe’s most unusual theatre venues, blending modern engineering with the Baroque elegance of the Castle Garden. Built in 1958 as an experimental stage, it features a unique rotating seating platform that slowly turns during performances, allowing the natural scenery of the garden to become part of the unfolding story. This innovative design makes it possible for audiences to experience multiple “sets” without moving from their seats, creating a cinematic sense of motion in a live performance. Inside the open‑air structure, visitors can see how the mechanism works: the entire auditorium, seating hundreds, rotates smoothly on a circular track powered by a sophisticated system hidden beneath the platform. The surrounding garden becomes a living backdrop—forest paths, fountains, and historic pavilions shift into view as scenes change. The repertoire ranges from opera and ballet to drama, often staged specifically to take advantage of the moving perspective. It is a rare fusion of technology, landscape, and theatre that has become a cultural icon of Český Krumlov.

The Revolving Auditorium in Český Krumlov is an open-air theatre with a unique rotating auditorium, located in the middle of the historic Baroque Castle Garden, near the Bellaria Summer Palace and the castle’s Riding Hall. It sits at K Zámecké zahradě, just a short walk from the castle’s 5th Courtyard and the castle entrance, making it part of the larger castle complex. Since 1958, this world-unique summer stage of the South Bohemian Theatre has hosted around 80 performances each year from June to September, attracting about 55,000 spectators for plays performed after dark. The revolving auditorium allows the audience to turn toward different scenic backdrops within the castle park, surrounded by hundreds of years old trees for an unforgettable atmosphere. Nearby, you can explore the magnificent State Castle and Chateau Český Krumlov, the best-preserved Baroque Theatre in the world, the Masquerade Hall, and the 86-meter-high Castle Tower with panoramic views. The French-style castle gardens feature the cascading Renaissance fountain and the rococo Bellaria Summer Palace, which doubles as part of the amphitheater.
