Egon Schiele atelier

About

The Egon Schiele Atelier in Český Krumlov is a quiet, atmospheric space that preserves the memory of one of Austria’s most provocative early‑20th‑century artists. Schiele lived and worked here in 1911, drawn to the town’s dramatic rooftops, winding alleys, and the sense of freedom it offered a young painter breaking away from academic norms. His stay was brief and turbulent—local authorities disapproved of his unconventional lifestyle—but the atelier remains a rare place where visitors can feel his presence. Inside, the studio displays reproductions of Schiele’s works created during his Krumlov period, including expressive townscapes and emotionally charged portraits. Archival photographs, letters, and personal notes help trace his artistic evolution and his complex relationship with the town, which inspired him yet ultimately pushed him away. The preserved workspace, with its simple furnishings and soft natural light, offers insight into how he observed and transformed everyday scenes into bold, angular compositions. It is an intimate stop for anyone interested in the roots of modern expressionism.

Location

Egon Schiele Atelier in Český Krumlov is a restored garden house on Linecká Street, perched on a rocky slope right above the Vltava River in the Plešivec suburb. It is less than 500 meters from the main square and is conveniently close to car park P3 and the children’s traffic playground. In 1911, this cozy house served as both residence and studio for the famous Austrian painter Egon Schiele, where he created well-known works such as Town on the Blue River and Krumlov by Night. The atelier is open to the public in the summer months, and a small café with river terraces now operates in the house, inviting visitors to enjoy coffee while soaking up the unique artistic atmosphere. The setting, surrounded by roses, vines, and terraces overlooking the river, is considered romantic and inspiring for both artists and non-artists alike. Nearby, you can explore the historic center of Český Krumlov, including the UNESCO-listed old town and its meandering streets. The dominant landmark is the massive Český Krumlov Castle and Chateau, with its tower, baroque theater, and gardens, just a short walk away. Other close attractions include the Egon Schiele Art Centrum gallery in Široká Street (a former town brewery), the Museum Fotoatelier Seidel, and scenic riverside walks along the Vltava. The area also offers easy access to canoeing and rafting on the river, as well as views of the town’s iconic skyline and the synagogue near the southern meander.
